Many people don't realize how much social media affect them. For my self, I used Social Media since i was in middle School, which is 2009. (From the first era of friendster to the Glorious era of Facebook, Twitter, and now Instagram) too bad i did't use TikTok. Which mean, social media has been huge part of my daily routine for almost 11 years.
For the last two month i feel like i have a very unhealthy relationship with social media, i became more anxious, more restless, i got distracted from my goal and i feel lonely.
So i decided to make an announcement on my instagram Story and Twitter .
"Can't Believe i made this announcement, i'm taking a break from social media, I will not be able to reply your DMs and Comments, for undecided Period of Time, just Don't want to make people i'm ignoring them"
Yes you heard me right ! I'm Taking a break from Social Media!!!
And here are reasons why i'm taking a break and why you should too:
1. I Can't Stop Checking My Phone All The Time !!!
Let me ask you something. What is the first things you do in the morning ? Are you doing drinking your water? Makeup your bed? Praying? or Work out?
As I said before, the first things I did when i woke up in the morning is checking my phone. And not in the morning but i can't help my self to not checking my social media every hours of my day.(in my office, during my lunch, after I get home, while waiting for something, when hangout with friends and family).
I convinced my self that there's always something to check, and I'm afraid I'm going to missed out something, when in reality there's none.
2. I spent a whole day to select a photo and a caption to post.
One of the things i realized not right was, i care a lot about what people think of me! (My face, my makeup, my body, my clothes and many more) No matter how hard I tried to denied this.
I became self conscious and i created this "perfect" image of my self which didn't 100% exist. I didn't post my self when I have acne and scars, i didn't post my photos when I gain weight and look chubby, I didn't post photo with bad angel and many more.
3. Okay 5 more minutes,then I'll sleep. (I end up sleeping 3 hours later)
I started to develop a habit of hard to sleep year ago, this causes from a heartbreak, a problem at work, anxiety, sadness and I'm a pisces , so I'm a natural overthinker 🤣.Instead of addressing this issue like talking to a friend, meditating or finding other positive activities. I always turned to social media whenever I'm feeling down.
I would compulsively view my friend's story, did a mindless scrolling of makeup video, memes or a tiktok video and it make me harder to sleep.
And this started to became a habit, even though I didn't feel sad I would do mindless scrolling every night. So, I have poor and short quality of sleep, and made me tired every morning.
4. Distracted and less Productive
Now, I admit that I am addicted to it, social media has distracted me from the things I suppose to do in real life.Like get an 8 hours of sleep, workout, doing my college task, concentrating in work and so much more.Or i can't simply having a conversation with my friends without get distracted of my phone's notifications or simply a mindless scrolling.
You are the one who know yourself
Don't get me wrong social media has many benefits too, it's a platform when you can share your art, open a discussion, for entertainment.📷
But if you feel like you get out of control and you addicted to it, that it affect your mental health and your productivity you should set some boundaries and get back on track again.
So I actually do when I'm taking a break from social media:

I deleted all social media app on my phone (Instagram,Twitter, Facebook) so that i'm not distracted by the notification. I only open it from my laptop or a web.
I don't 100% quit,i limit the usage based on my schedule. For instance i only, use twitter on weekend.
I plan to taking this break for 60 days, to see what happened.
I originally keep YouTube and Netflix but I ended up deleting them too, because as soon as I deleted my social media i turned to them, which is the same.
I tried to implement a healthy habit again everyday (still working on it)
Set goals every single day .
So, I will update you what I learned from 60 days of social media detoxing later.
And don't forget to wash your hands, and stay safe guys, xo ❤
